2nd Welwyn (Oaklands) Backwoods Camp
Posted on 28 March 2018
From Friday 16th March until Sunday 18th March some hardy Scouts, I included, participated in a Backwoods Camp at Harmer Green run by some brave Leaders. With temperatures set to be below freezing it was going to be an adventure!
With thoughts of hammock sleeping put aside for many the Icelandic’s went up and we worked to keep warm with a wide game on the Friday called Hullabaloo.
By Saturday morning the snow had arrived and the thought of going outside was for some a hard task! With a freshly prepared warming breakfast of Eggy Bread and sausages in us we set about stocking up on wood to keep the campfire alight all day.
Amongst our activities we had the task of gutting and de-boning SQUIRREL! Once cooked I thought it tasted like nutty pork! This was served alongside our prepared dishes of Paella.
Saturday night saw temperatures plummet even further and the leaders handed out survival bags, space blankets extra sleeping mats and sleeping bags! We hung around the camp fire for as long as possible before going to bed.
It was a fantastic experience and I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the Scout Leaders of 2nd Welwyn (Oaklands) for braving the elements with us! Here’s to the next camp!!!!
